Accra, the capital city of Ghana, is facing a growing problem of rampant theft of metal gratings. Alleged scrap dealers are targeting these metal covers, which are crucial for public safety and street maintenance.

The stolen gratings not only pose a danger to pedestrians and motorists but also result in additional costs for the nation. The Department of Urban Roads estimates that fixing metal gratings in just 15 locations could amount to approximately GHc200,000.00.

The Alarming Situation in Accra

A visit to various locations in Accra by www.myjoyonline has revealed the extent of the problem. Thieves have removed many metal covers on storm drains, leaving open holes that endanger anyone using the city’s roads and walkways.

Open drainage systems like this, which are typically seen on Accra’s urban roads, have led the Urban Roads in Accra to wage a new war on the perpetrators, leading to the arrest of a few suspects.

This widespread theft has prompted the Department of Urban Roads to take action, collaborating with the National Security to apprehend the perpetrators. Despite the arrest of some suspects, the thefts continue unabated, causing concern among the authorities regarding public safety.

Residents of Accra are deeply worried about the situation. Madam Adwoa Ansah, a resident of Adabraka, shared her concerns, noting that the thieves primarily strike during the night.

Several unfortunate incidents have already occurred, with people falling into the drains and sustaining injuries. The residents are calling on the city authorities to find more effective ways to combat these thefts and protect the public.

Removing metal covers in the metropolis poses danger to both pedestrians and motorists.

Urban Roads’ Approach to Combatting Metal Grating Theft

Kofi Nti Appiagyei, the Senior Development Engineer at the Department of Urban Roads, expressed his deep concern about the ongoing thefts.

The department is taking a two-pronged approach to tackle the problem. Firstly, they are relying on the police to apprehend the thieves. Secondly, they are introducing a new type of cover made with composite materials that scrap dealers find less attractive.

The covering of open storm drains, underground utility vaults, and other drains in the city serves a vital purpose.

Mr. Appiagyei revealed that Urban Roads is working with a local company to produce gratings using materials that will not fetch a high price in the scrap market. This approach will not only deter thieves but also save the nation money in the long run.

The covering of open storm drains, underground utility vaults, and other drains in cities serves a useful purpose.

Collaborating with Municipal Authorities

To effectively protect the metal gratings, Ing. Kofi Nti Appiagyei believes that municipal, district, and metropolitan assemblies should take responsibility.

The Department of Urban Roads has reached out to the National Security agency and other stakeholders for support. As a result, the Department of Urban Roads has arrested several individuals, but more action is needed to resolve this crisis.

The Impact on Public Safety

The theft of metal gratings in Accra has far-reaching consequences for public safety. These stolen covers leave open holes on pedestrian walkways and roads, posing hazards for all road users.

Accidents and injuries resulting from these uncovered drains are on the rise, further highlighting the urgency of the situation. It is crucial for the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address this growing threat.

Metal plates like the one above are usually used to cover various storm drains on pedestrian walkways in Accra.

The Need for Public Vigilance

Public vigilance is essential in combating metal grating theft, in addition to the active engagement of the Department of Urban Roads and other agencies.

Residents should report any suspicious activities or thefts they witness. By working together, the community and authorities can create a safer environment for everyone.

Conclusion

Accra’s ongoing problem of metal grating theft is a significant public safety risk and a burden on the nation. The Department of Urban Roads is taking steps to address the issue by collaborating with the National Security agency, introducing new composite covers, and engaging municipal authorities.

Scrap dealers are allegedly stealing these metal covers from all major cities in Ghana to sell.

However, the thefts continue, and it is crucial for the public to remain vigilant and report any incidents. By actively combating this crime, Accra can ensure the safety of its residents and maintain the integrity of its infrastructure.
