Effluent Discharge: The liquid effluent, now partially treated, is discharged into the subsurface soil through a drain field, soakaway, or sand filter.

    • Maintain adequate distance from water sources to prevent contamination (7.5–30 meters, depending on water table depth)
    • Digester Size:
      • Choose the right size based on the number of users (standard digester for 10 people)
  • Flushing System:
    • Micro-flush systems use 0.5 – 1.5 liters per flush
    • Full-flush systems use 6-9 liters per flush
  • Effluent Disposal:
    • Pipe drain fields are suitable for well-drained soils
    • Soakaways are ideal for limited land spaces
    • Sand filters are useful in high-water table areas

Bio-Digester Toilet Construction and Installation

The process involves two main parts:

  1. Prefabricated Component Construction:
    • Constructing wall slabs, cover slabs, and porous filter slabs using reinforced concrete.
    • The dimensions of a standard bbiodigesterare are 1800mm long x 600mm wide x 600mm deep.
  2. Installation:
    • Prepare the site by clearing and leveling the ground.
    • Excavate a pit for the digester and a trench for the drain field.
    • Assemble the digester using precast components and mortar.
    • Install the porous filter, inlet pipe, and outlet pipe.
    • Add bulking material on top of the filter.
    • Cover the digester with the cover slab and seal it.
    • Build a privy or toilet room on top of the digester or offset from it.

    • Odor or flies may indicate excess moisture or a clogged drain field.
    • Slow draining may indicate a blockage.

    • Remove around 90% of the sludge without breaking the mesh lining on the porous slab, and dispose of it properly.
  • Dos and Don’ts:
    • Do inspect your system annually and practice water conservation.
    • Don’t flush harmful substances or add graywater, and keep all runoff away from the system.

  • How much water can be flushed daily? A properly installed biodigester can handle the flushes of 10 users daily, provided the drain field is functional and the soil is well-drained.
  • Can biodigesters be used as dry toilets? No, they require moisture for microbes to thrive.
  • Can grey water be connected to the biodigester? No. Additional hydraulic loading from the baths, laundry, and kitchen (with oils, for instance) can cause frequent flooding of the digester.
  • What do I do when the biodigester is full? Follow the desludging procedure (video above).
  • How often should a biodigester be desludged? If installed correctly and used appropriately, biodigesters do not require frequent desludging. It is projected to fill between 3 – 5 years. Otherwise, projections of up to 10-20 years have been made based on the oldest installations.

  • Can tissue paper be flushed into a biodigester? Yes, soft tissue paper is acceptable.
  • What is the lifespan of a bio-digester? The lifespan depends on the drain field functionality and the number of users. When these are observed, the bio-digester should last up to 10 years for filter replacements and up to 20 years for the concrete products.
